177. Must be Bush's Fault (Again!)
I am amazed that overnight he could address the Rev. Wright incident, but fail to ever publicly address the Flight 253 attempted BOMBING incident until several days later. I suppose that might have interrupted his vacation time. Where ARE his priorities! Where is his Common Sense? Let's attack Fox News instead of attacking the terrorists! Let's prosecute the terrorists in U.S. courts while they detonate bombs on airplanes! Wonder what word he'll use for this terrorist act -- remember how the Fort Hood Nidal Hasan killings weren't called terrorism? And we went through the phase that it wasn't a "WAR" on terrorism -- evil word. I fail to see any reason for not saying what you mean and meaning what you say; thus, I have a real problem for President Pinocchio and administration. I am actually starting to believe they say what they mean and that is to hell with this country, we'll just issue time-outs. They will heal the evil in the world, like Iran trying to smuggle raw uranium as reported here. Does anybody else out there see the failure of this administration and government? I can work my way around the financial crises, the one we had and the one down the road after the congressional clown's fill their pockets with special earmarks to guarantee their Aye-Votes for the unnecessarily expensive health care reform, but National Security exposures and incidents are beyond comprehension and logic. Is the only way for O to succeed is to actually let a major terrorist incident occur on U.S. soil and then play the resolver? Phew, my hair's standing up on my neck and jowls getting tight. Throw me a log and I'll show you how fast I can make it into measly toothpicks!

174. "The World is Curved" Highlights
- Always remember, lack of confidence is the major cause of market downturns
- Keep an eye on the dollars pouring into Treasuries for this suggests the market's liquidity is drying up which is usually followed by nobody trusting anybody else, the halt of lending, and higher interest rates.
- The 2007-2008 subprime crisis was not because the size of the subprime was unknown, but an issue of not knowing where the toxic waste (securitization) was.
- Today's world is different with workers not obediently following official rules and chasing opportunities by constantly reinventing careers. Thus, seniority is of no concern and neither are pensions forcing today's workers to self-invest when they generally lack the skills or discipline to do so. All this leads to a weak security in a fast-paced global economy.
- Globalization has been a wealth generation machine
- Beware: China is an aging society and consumption will be dampened affecting the global economy. Because of their control of population limiting parents to one child, by 2045 as many as 1 in 3 Chinese will be retired. When labor declines faster than the population, the economy will suffer. Fewer exports will not only severely harm China's economy, but drive prices and interest up in the U.S.
- Invest in Europe because their trade with the U.S. is less than 10% and therefore would seem unaffected by U.S. declines in consumption? Nope. The degrees of financial integration with the U.S. is high as evidenced by the subprime crisis.
- Whereas in the past trade drove capital flows; today, capital flows drive trade. Because of the modernization of currency and trading systems, capital moves instantaneously around the world allowing, for example, wealthy countries and their sovereign funds to snap up any resource in an unbelievably short period of time. Case in point: China is buying up commodities like tin, zinc, gold, iron ore to the quantity of one third the world's annual supplies. They tried to totally corner the iron ore market driving steel prices through the roof. Russia, Dubai, and the Saudis are also following suit.
- China and Japan together hold significant number of dollars, while China continuously adds Euros and gold to their reserves. Could the dollar collapse because of this? We believe they realize they would be shooting themselves in the foot to dump all their dollars. Now there's something good. However, the stockpiling of Euros is driving that currency higher. We all know by now that a strong currency hurts exports. Europe is going to have to change something soon, such as drop interest rates and flood the market with more Euros. A secondary consideration re Europe is that a country like Germany with great manufacturing capabilities and products runs with the same Euro as countries like Italy which are quite inferior to Germany's strength. So, is a "world" currency like the Euro spanning many countries a solution at all?
- The best scenario seems to be a stable dollar; don't worry too much about slight dips or strengths. This stability in all currencies is desirable.
- How to prevent a U.S. meltdown? Politicians need to avoid protectionism and anything else that would discourage foreign investments in the U.S.; foreign headquartered companies employ much of our workforce AND even greater capital produced from the products produced. In other words, don't bite the hand that feeds you.
- Why do the Chinese have so much capital to hoard the commodities and invest in foreign real estate and businesses? They SAVE. Why? They have no social security nor welfare -- they must save on their own. And, it's the Communist party that controls the financial systems down to the value of the Yuan and setting interest rates -- they do not have a modern financial system that can flow synchronously with other world powers. Even the Chinese leader has no control over the party of elites.
- Fact is their economy has been exploding. Another fact is that a lot of the hype is distorted by the undervalued Yuan and reasonable interest rates which will bite them in the end. It's the major cities, particularly the coastal cities, that have been given the advantage of modernization. However, they cannot afford to let everybody move into the cities and have controls to keep them out. One strategy is to put most of the males in the military, not to defend against foreign attacks, but to control domestic problems. The masses in the rural environments have been causing unrest for years because they are not been given the opportunities of those in the middle class/elite cities. Some believe that an economy growth rate below 7.5%, wow the U.S. would like that, would cause great unemployment -- they having been growing at 9%+. Now, wouldn't that cause a few problems there and in the rest of the world that depends on cheap products from China!
- Keep an eye on China's inflation rate! It isn't low now, yet their undervalue yuan and reasonable interest rates they may be sending out a very distorted picture. A jump in their inflation will catapult America's inflation.
- Let me reiterate the demographics issues with both China and Japan: They are both becoming an aging society. The U.S.is too, but much less than these two. Aging societies SAVE and SPEND LESS. Harry Dent has written several books in the past decade predicting the U.S. economy problems coming next year and 2011 because the peak of the boomers will retire. His last book, which I didn't find too enlightening in respect to his previous books, foresees a Depression in the future. If America could be hurt as Mr. Dent suggests by it's aging population, how will the world be affects by China and Japan? We are still some time off from the major impact of their aging, but be prepared.
- Another comment by Mr. Smick related to the poor estimation of requirements done by the Chinese. Hence, the over stockpiling of commodities. Consider the dumping of excess on the market too.
- Lastly, understand the "power-brokers" that highly influence the global market: (1) investors of oil-producing nations, (2) Asian Central Banks and sovereign funds presently hoarding Euros and Gold in addition to Dollars, (3) hedge funds, and, even (4) private equity firms.

159. $pend $pend $pend
It also mentioned "The bill also approves a 2 percent pay increase for federal workers." Now doesn't that chap me butt! Medicare recipients got 0% raise becasue cost-o-living was ZERO! But, ALL federal employees get 2%? They forgot to mention, as did Glenn Beck, that the number of federal employees with salaries over $170,000 is over 1700! Hypocrites!
Then, of course, the FINAL spending bill will be the Defense Bill. Now who will turn that down? There goes another $626 Billion they knew about but decided it was much more important to first vote in the waste projects.
The article also points out "The Citizens Against Government Waste said those projects included construction of a county farmer's market in Kentucky, renovation of a historic theater in New York and restoration of a mill in Rhode Island."
And We the People keep voting these jerks back into their cushy seats of Congress! When will we ever wake up? I suppose not until the several Trillion dollar health bill passes and we find ourselves in another oil crisis. I'm so glad I am atune to the chaos government, not just this administration, has and is causing us. Plan accordingly. We're nearing another blowout disguised as a false stock market bubble. The continued debt is not sustainable. The bubble will burst.

So, let's just say O bought more Band-Aids to the slaughter -- too bad for those amputees. Plus, implementing a zero CG plan will give him an excuse why they aren't collecting enough to cover the Trillion Dollar plans and, thus, go after you next. Don't you love this administration and Congress?
156. Obama Job Stimulus 1/3 Right
The second key category, infrastructure spending (bridges, roads, rail and water) is a second attempt to stimulate jobs. This I see is no more than a follow-on to the already unsuccessful program; I do not see any PERMANENT jobs from this.
The third category is clean energy rebates for home projects related to energy savings (insulation, windows, etc.) -- Note, there already ARE CREDITS for this, so I don't follow what he is planning here other than wasting more taxpayer money for a select few. Certainly the poor people and renters can't benefit.
From what I understand, and nobody does yet, this would all cost us $100B-200B from the unused TARP money. I say, forget the bailouts of the plans that never worked (infrastructure and clean energy) and JUST COMMIT to zero CG tax on businesses. Wouldn't think any money needs to prop this up, because I would expect the market would drive the companies by themselves. The expensing I see as a separate short-term tool -- sure, go ahead and fund one years worth of lost taxes for the expenses.

January will be a month to fear earning reports, especially if retail is dismal as expected and if more than the part-timers working through the holiday are laid off. Bad earnings, more job losses, and slowdown to manufacturing will spell a troubled quarter or first half. Particularly damaging will be the passing of the $1T+ health care bill, the Cap & Tax (oh, Trade) bill, and the printing of more money to disguise the damage. So, beware, dragons ahead. But, do go ahead and enjoy the Christmas season and make every last buck you can before the bubble bursts.

I found this to be an interesting summary of the economy through YTD 2009 and a glimpse of 2010. Although the original source is unknown, it was posted on Barry Ritholtz's blog http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/. Click on the image to ZOOM IN to read it. Here are a few bullets from the data:
- Global Economy shrank 2.4% in 2009 YTD
- Global Economy expected to return to rise 2.5% in 2010
- US Economy shrank 2.6% in 2009 YTD
- US Economy expected to rise 0.8% in 2010 (Not very exciting)
- Exports shrank 24% in 2009 YTD but leveling off (yet our Treasurer Geithner just claimed on CNBC this morning that exports have been good this year -- see the lies!)
- Over 100 Banks failed so far in 2009
- 2009 Auto Sales are running at only 72% of 2008 (and now the GM CEO resigned amidst the pay ceilings and government controls over GM -- good luck replacing him with anybody qualified)
- Airlines continue to fly fewer flights and have fewer passengers

145. New Christmas Poem
This poem was written by a Marine
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE
MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER IN IRAQ ,
LAY SLEEPING,SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY,
ALL IS SECURE.'
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

139. How You Support the Illegals
(Source Unknown for the following)
Here is an example of why hiring illegal aliens is not economically productive for the United States.
You have two families: "Joe Legal" and "Jose Illegal," both families have two parents, two children, and live in California:
JOE LEGAL | JOSE ILLEGAL |
works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes $25.00 per hour with taxes deducted. | also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash "under the table". |
|
|
Ready? Now pay attention. | |
$25.00/hr x 40 hours = $1000.00 / week or $52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax Joe Legal now has $36,400.00. | $15.00/hr x 40 hours = $600.00 / week, or Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00. |
pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year.
| has full medical and dental coverage through the state and local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year.
|
makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. pays $500.00 / month for food, or $6,000.00 / yr. Joe Legal now has $23,200.00. | has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps and welfare.
Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00. |
pays rent of $1,200.00 / month, or $14,400.00 / yr
| receives a $500.00 / month federal rent subsidy. Jose Illegal pays $500 per month or $6,000.00 per year. |
pays $200.00 / month, or $2,400.00 / yr for insurance. Joe Legal now has $6,400.00. | Jose Illegal says, "We don't need no stinkin' insurance!" and still has $31,200.00. |
Joe Legal has to make his $6,400.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc. | Jose Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every month. |
Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work. | Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family. |
Joe Legal's and Jose Illegal's children both attend the same school. Joe Legal pays for his children's lunches | Joe Legal's and Jose Illegal's children both attend the same school. Jose Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch. |
Do you get it, now?
If you vote for or support any politician that supports illegal aliens: You are part of the problem!
It's WAY PAST time to take a stand for America and Americans!

138. More HC Bill Pain
- You making more than $200K? Or jointly more than $250K? Congratulations, you get to pay an additional 0.5% of you pay the hospital (your payment + insurance payment). Actually, it may be in addition to another 1.45% which is one of the few-word changes in another act on top of the 0.5%.
- Notice how married couples are penalized, i.e., instead of 2 x $200K the amount is as low as $250K
- Also, the amounts are not indexed to inflation/salary increases. This means that if you just luck out in the first year, you might hit it the next year or shortly after. Like the AMT. You do recall how that was meant to be for the rich only and now hits up to 25M people.
- The amounts are not adjusted for cost-of-living. We will be thanking states like California and New York where the cost-of-living is higher for their generous contribution to our health care.
- Many of other limits/ceilings elsewhere in the Senate plan are also stated without adjustments for inflation and cost-of-living.

137. Stick'em Up - The Latest HC Bill
Section 9001 is a Tax on Insurance providers. Phew, not me, huh? Of course YOU; every tax gets passed through to the consumer. What? You didn't learn that yet? Given some defined annual cost limits ($8,500 for individual or $23,000 for family; what you pay + what your employer pays) on EMPLOYER health insurance plans, the insurance prover gets to pay (and pass along to you) a 40% tax on costs above those annual costs. But wait? How about UNION members? Add to these annual limitation costs another $1,350 (individual) or $3,000 (family) if you work in any of the following industries or high-risk categories: repair/installation of electrical/telecommunications lines, law enforcement, firefighting, out-patient emergency jobs, construction, forestry, fishing, agriculture (except food processing). Also increase these limits by 120% for year 2013, 110% for year 2014, and 105% for year 2015 if you are in the top 17 highest cost states in 2012. And, remind you employer to calculate and pay these taxes (ouch, poor small businesses) monthly to avoid a penalty on top. I have yet to figure out where the Insurance provider pays for it! Regardless, YOU end up paying higher premiums.
Section 9004: Have an HSA/MSA? Need to withdraw money for non-medical use. Well, the penalty for that will go from 10% to 20% starting in 2011.
Section 9008: Imposition Fee on drug companies who have revenue sales above some fixed aggregate amount. Now that's an incentive to to innovate. I would venture to guess this will kill Research and Development in America leaving us with generic drugs that may or may not absorb the same and higher risks of side-effects. If you can figure out this section, let me know. It appears that they would have to pay some proportion of $2.3B based on their revenues compared to all revenues. Good luck determining this. I wouldn't get my hopes up with my interpretation, but I did see something that eluded to the taxes collected going into the Medicare B trust fund.
Sections 9009 and 9010: Like 9008, let's tax the medical device manufacturers and insurance companies too for excess revenues/profits. More incentives to lay off people to manage operations with fewer dollars! Or, just pass the taxes through to YOU again!
Section 9013: Here's a gotcha. Remember Schedule A where you itemize your expenses? Remember that only medical expenses must be above 7.5 % may be included? Well, it's going to be 10% between 1/1/2013 and 12/13/2016. Now you are paying higher taxes directly imposed on you in addition to all the other taxes passed onto you via higher premiums as above.
Section 9015: You making more than $200K? Or jointly more than $250K? Congratulations, you get to pay an additional 0.5% of you pay the hospital (your payment + insurance payment). Actually, it may be in addition to another 1.45% which is one of the few-word changes in another act on top of the 0.5%.
Section 9017: And forget that Cosmetic Elective Surgery. You won't want that hip or knee replaced. Unless you want to pay an additional 5% tax on the total cost regardless of whether you pay or you insurance pays.
Enough? Surrender? Can you see why you will be paying more in Premiums AND Taxes? Can you understand why companies will be laying off more people? Can you understand why companies will continue to move portions of their company out of America? Can you understand why small businesses will dry up? Please note that over 70% of new jobs created are by small businesses. Can you understand why Obama has now stated (no more than 2 days ago) that we may experience a double valley recession? Is this what you want for you and your children? Killing the economy is reason enough to postpone ANY Health Care Bill that attempts to solve everything in one package. This bill is 2074 pages! Use you Common Sense. Write your congressman or congress woman. READ this article also that was just posted.

133. Summary of Important Events/News/Books
2. We have noticed in the last month or two that Lou Dobbs has finally put his guts and opinions above the liberal CNN network limitations. Tonight he announced his last broadcast with CNN! We're with you Lou! We had both commented that he would be better off with Fox News. Rumors have it that he is going to Fox Business.
3. Fort Hood - I want to thank Bill O'Reilly for calling a spade a spade and even getting a liberal columnist to finally agree and use the words Muslim Extremist Terrorist. The Political Correctness needs to cease! Maybe to respect all religions, the words should be Jihadist Terrorists -- but still, a Jihadist is a Muslim who supports the Jihad. Its unfortunate that the Jihadists don't have a separate, distinct religion to separate the majority of peace loving Muslims and the few radical Jihadists.
4. The market continues edging upward and not losing any strength
5. We started to browse through Glenn Beck's book "Arguing With Idiots." I didn't realize it, but the succession to the presidency isn't bad enough that the next in line is Joe Biden, then Nancy Pelosi. Who do you think is 3rd? The Pro-Tempore of the senate: Robert Byrd. Wow, we need some revisions to the Constitution! What is he? 101?
6. Renewable Energy:
- 100 sq. Miles of land is required for a wind/solar farm to "produce" the same energy as a one sq. mile coal or nuclear plan
- The Energy transmission grid is a major inhibitor of wind/solar energy. Note that the green people are saying build the solar in the Mojave Desert where there are thousands of sq. miles of land, or build the wind in the plains where large farmlands are available, then send it to California and other needy states. Fact is that energy losses are 10% for every 60 miles of transmission lines. For California, only around 9% of the energy produced will be there to consume.
- Greenies site the progress made by telling you 9% of today's energy demands are met by renewable energy. Facts are that 90% of the 9% has been around for decades via Hydro plants. And, it is many of these that are being threatened because of other environmental groups who want, and have already succeeded, in tearing down dams.
- The solar energy hitting the earth results in the ability of lighting ONE 100-watt light bulb per the area of a card table IF if the techno;logy can convert at 100% efficiency. No technology has gotten over 20% yet.
- An interesting paradox realized decades ago is that any increase in improving energy efficiencies will result in more energy to be consumed. Why? I give you a car that gives you 30 mpg instead of the 22 mpg you have and you drive it more to the tune of more gas being consumed. You swap out those old light bulbs for the new ones that fail faster if you turn then off and on and you leave them on longer. Think of anything and you will see this paradox's reality.
- One type of energy production, Geothermal, is viable, but not readily availability everywhere. Iceland will enjoy 70% of the electric from Geothermal by 2010. California has Geothermal. You need a vent hole -- natural or man made drilled deep into the earth, more than the 3 miles of that of the deepest oil well. What is Geothermal? A Terrestrial energy -- the decay heat of radioactive Uranium and Thorium heats the water underground that is pumped or naturally sent to the surface (think geysers) and can be used to spin the generators. Now think nuclear energy -- produced exactly the same in a controlled environment.
- Is nuclear energy safe: Chernobyl is the only incident that harmed mankind (only 40 dead) BECAUSE the Russians did not build a plant with safety standards as were built elsewhere in the world (note, France has most nuclear generation). For example, they never built an iron and concrete containment around the boiler. They also used a graphite moderator instead of water moderator. What this? A water moderator is the interjection of elements of water whose atoms can slow down the neurons of splitting uranium/thorium which move to fast to cause a chain reaction unless slowed down. Hence, if a leak in the water cooling tank happens, the chain reaction will stop instead of continuing to heat up. This principle is a built-in safety to absolutely avoid any explosions. However, in Russia they used graphite atoms which provide more efficient chain action production, but if the water cooling leaks the graphite does the opposite. It accelerates the chain reactions and gets hotter. Eventually, it itself becomes flammable and explodes -- hence, Chernobyl. More radioactivity was reported at Three Miles Island from Chernobyl than from the minor incident there. There was no breach of any deadly/harming radioactivity from Three Miles island at that event almost 30 years ago today.
- I could continue the facts. Let me point you to "Terrestrial Energy" by William Tucker instead. Learn why the only viable solution to the energy problems is a Nuclear-Solar alliance. Nuclear for the base and solar for peak needs.
