    1. You might try this: http://hikeofyourlife.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-to-move-vista7-free-cell-and-other.html

    2. I searched but could not find 3B C6 0F 4C

    3. IF you are sure you are looking at a 64-bit Windows 7 module, then I would make sure you have the HEX editor set up to search for HEX code before doing the search. Otherwise, you won't find the string. Recently, I also posted a reply that the XP version of Freecell works as is without any hack. The module in the Games folder after a W10 install or update is NOT the Windows 7 module referenced here. You need to pick it up from Windows.old OR a saved copy before any W10 install.

  2. Thank you very much, Sam...it works exactly as advertised on the label. Cheers!

  3. It doesn't seem to work on Minesweeper or Mahjong. Any thoughts? I searched for the hex code "3B C6 0F 4C", but couldn't find it in those games (64-bit version).

  4. Looks like Microsoft is wise to this fix...when I downloaded the new Windows 10 Family Edition (or something like that), it wiped out all the fixed games...but at least, thanks to the .bak file, I could do the same thing again.

  5. RE: Anonymous Nov. 15--that hex code doesn't appear in Mahjong and Minesweeper because they aren't card games.

    1. It worked for chess, and chess isn't a card game.

    2. So true. But, I had to keep the chess folder in Program Files, whereas, I can run the card games from a folder in Documents that I own (didn't want another MSFT upgrade to wipe it out again). I also needed the chess.dll from the pre-November upgrade system that was needed instead of the CardGames.dll (copied into the chess folder). Thanks for bringing chess up; I forgot about it.

  6. Even though Mahjong and Minesweeper are not card games, it seem like the same kind of fix could work. Any thoughts?

    1. Thanks for the replies re Mahjong and Minesweeper. I too have not found the solution and posted several places to see if someone else had. The hex zaps (option 2) simply zapped the coded so it wouldn't check the version to detect whether it was the new and (not) improved versions of the Windows 7 versions. I was hoping that Mahjong and Minesweeper had similar code, but it certainly isn't the same. On a different site I had a reply that my Option 1 solution does NOT provide a free versions and is a bit different too. I again iterate that I a would not opt for Option 1. So new viewers should do Option 2 only! This, I am editing the post to state such. To those who did Option 2, enjoy it and as one of the Anonymous viewers stated, ensure you have a backup of the Windows 7 game should it accidentally, or intentionally, get wiped out. I had backed up my entire system prior to Windows 10 and can always get back to the Windows 7 code should I need it. Enjoy.

  7. Cannot find HEX 4C in 3B C6 0F 4C. Any other options?

  8. Are you working with either Freecell, Spider, Chess, or Hearts from the Windows.old folder created at the time you converted from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and the 1st windows.old ever existing? If you had converted BEFORE November 2015 but installed the November cumulative updates, the windows.old folder is created again (now the 2nd one created) and probably no longer has the correct code in it. Do you have any other backup of the Windows 7 code that you created yourself? The original Windows 7 code should have the 4C in the string.

  9. I cannot edit the freecell.exe. I don't have permission, is there a way around this? cannot open "for write access.Access is denied.

  10. Probably need to "run as administrator"

    1. Thanks...that would be my guess and suggestion. HxD must be Run as Administrator. Let us know if not the solution.

  11. H'mmm...it worked fine, Rich, until a system update, which left the card games the way I had edited them (as above)...but now none of them will open!

    1. Even tried the same thing on the backup I had made, altering the hex code again, but it still won't open. Even tried running the altered program in Win 7 compatibility mode...nothing at all.

    2. Just so you'll know, it's Windows 10 Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.29)

    3. And one other thing, just so you'll know--yes, this was with the Microsoft Games folder removed from the Program Files folder...and even renamed!

    4. Here's what I have and where:
      My Shortcut goes to MYFOLDER
      MYFOLDER/whatevercardgame.exe w/modifications date=11/19/15 (modiified after 1511 update)
      MYFOLDER/cardgames.dll date=7/13/09

I do also have exactly both the files above in Program Files Folder but shortcut not pointing to them

In windows.old folder for the cardgames, the .exe file has date 8/2/15 (date 1511 update put on. It did NOT have my mods in it.

Did you change your Shortcut to point to now correct card game .exe file?

    5. If I understand, you got it to work BEFORE the 1511 update, but it doesn't work now and you took the old games exe and repeated the code changes. Right? In that case I must ask if you repeated step 3 and took the ORIGINAL CARDGAMES.DLL file and reinserted it in your present Games folder? I believe I restored the original FOLDER which would also have included the original file. So, if you instead only restored the original .exe file, NOT the entire folder, I would try recopying the cardgames.dll files to each card game. Let me know if that works.

  13. This was really helpful - thank you. I SO agree with your frustration that Microsoft have decided to remove this, and really appreciate your help. However, I am using a version from an old computer that was running Windows XP, and I can't find the code in the hex editor to change... presumably because I am not updating a Windows 7 version. Any ideas what to search for and replace?

    1. Not at this time, but I do have an old XP system still around and will look at its games and try to get it onto W10 if I have it.

    2. On my XP system I copied from c:\Windows\System32 both FREECELL.EXE and CARD.DLL onto a USB memory card;ignore the freecell SHORTCUT in the games folder--you do NOT want this. Plugged memory card into my W10 system and executed Freecell.exe from the USB Memory card. Works like a champ. I suppose I could copy both freecell.exe and cards.dll from the USB Memory to W10's SYSTEM32 (no Freecell nor cards DLLs exist there) and run it there too. However, I don't know if the XP version of cards.dll would interfere with the updated W7 version I already have installed. The XP version I picked up was 5.1.2600.0, 8/4/2004. Good luck.

    1. It took me a while since I lost my ID and password for the referenced ElDiabl0 posting at https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/windows-7-games-for-windows-8-8-1-multilanguage.56428/. After you create a SIGNIN to that forum you and get to first page of postings, there is a screen image that DOES allow selection of Freecell. Please try again to get to the post at the site above.
